Rupee opens flat at 64.80 against US dollar
The rupee on Monday opened on a flat note at 64.80 against dollar against the previous close of 64.79 a dollar.
Equity markets were trading in red in early deals on Monday following global cues. The BSE Sensex was trading 133 points, or 0.42 per cent, down at 31789.36 in early trade, while NSE Nifty index was down 45 points, or 0.45 per cent, at 9,919.40.
The domestic currency had plunged nearly 100 paise in the past two weeks. The RBI fixed the reference rate for the dollar at 64.9596 and for the euro at 77.7566 on Friday.
Foreign portfolio investors have pulled out around Rs 5,500 crore from equity markets so far in September due to geopolitical concerns and a tendency to take profit.
The net outflow by foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) follows withdrawal of Rs 12,770 crore from equities in August. Prior to that, they had pumped in over Rs 62,000 crore in the past six months.
